An iOS feature that revolutionizes preliminary and first hand care in life threatening emergencies making the use of advanced AI and Siri voice assistant

Emergency Cardiac Care | UX/UI Design

Imagine this scenario. You are on your way to the bus stop to catch a bus home. You see a bystander, who is mostly middle aged and judging by his suitcase, he's just finished work and is waiting for the bus along with you.

Suddenly! he shrieks and drops his suitcase, clutching his chest he collapses right in front of you!

Shocked at this sight, you immediately scream for help and call an ambulance!

As an untrained person, what will you do next?

The Problem

"In critical situations, regular individuals often lack awareness, proper guidance, and accessible methods to promptly administer basic life-saving actions that can swiftly aid the victim and save their life."

There are many life threatening emergencies that may occur in our lives.

For this project, I have chosen one of the most common, deadly but redeemable emergencies,
the heart attack and how we can save someone during the time of their need

A Silent Killer: The CPR Knowledge Gap

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a basic life saving techniques that can be used to provide first hand emergency care to those suffering from a heart attack. Everyone must know how to do perform CPR right? but the research tells otherwise.

We conducted a primary quantitative research in India to understand the awareness to performance ratio of CPR and found shocking results!

Having no idea about administering CPR will lead to devastating consequences

but...

What if, you can save someone having a heart attack without previous training?

INTRODUCING FIRST AID +

A life saving feature at the palm of your hands!

Health App

MEDICAL ID FEATURE

NEW FEATURE DESIGNED BY ME

First Aid is a new feature under the medical ID feature of the iPhone Health app.

It contains comprehensive instructions on first aid procedures specifically for life threatening emergencies such as, Heart attacks, Strokes, Burn Injuries and more.

Medical ID > Heart Attack

First Aid is available right below the health details. The Information is categorized and named according to the condition witnessed by the user.

The Big Challenge

How might we showcase the complete CPR procedure visually?

One of the most difficult challenges of this project was to visually indicate the complete procedure of CPR. Minimal use of text was required to help remove the language barrier, so I relied mainly on animated visual cues and voice based interactions to solve this problem.

Though text cannot be completely avoided, local language support could
help improve the accessibility for this feature.

The Solution : Interactive CPR Guidance on iPhone

STEP 1 of 6
CPR > Check Breathing

When the user clicks the proceed to perform CPR button, with the use of Siri Voice Assistant a call to the emergency services is placed automatically.

STEP 3 of 6
Next    > Hand Positioning

The visual cues indicate how the hands should be placed as well. Locking the fingers and the elbows is important for administering chest compressions.

STEP 2 of 6
Next    > Rescue breaths

microphone-black-shape.png

With the use of location permissions, your location is automatically picked up by the emergency services. This way the user is not distracted and can completely focus on saving the person and providing rescue breaths. A voice prompt "next" can also be used to proceed to the next step.

STEP 5 of 6
Next    > Repeat

The final step of providing CPR is to repeat the rescue breaths and the chest compressions until emergency services arrive. The user will be notified once EMS arrives

STEP 4 of 6
Next    > Chest Compressions

Chest Compression should be performed at a particular pace for which a count down with visual and audio cues are provided to help the user start and keep up the pace.

STEP 6 of 6
Help and Handover

Once the ambulance arrives, the person performing CPR will be notified through visual and audio cues. The emergency services can then take over. Any associated data of the patient including the recorded call to the EMS can then be easily transferred to the authorities via a simple QR code.

How might the user access this feature?

This feature can be accessed from 3 main touchpoints.

1. Swipe right on the lock screen

2. From the Health App

3. Through Voice Command

Scaling the feature

Though heart attacks are one of the many different life threatening emergencies, there are various other first aid measures that can be included within this feature for different cases such as strokes, burn injuries, fractures & sprains and many more.

This is how we could scale this feature and educate the common person about basic life saving techniques in developing nations and make this a safer and better place to live in!
